'Supporting the Student Experience in Online PGT'

Following the success of our inaugural conference, we are excited to once again welcome colleagues from across the online PGT sector to attend our annual conference.
The theme of this year's conference is 'Supporting the Student Experience in Online PGT'. The event will again be delivered in a hybrid format, with both online and in-person attendance and presenting options available. There are no registration fees for either attending or presenting at the conference.

For our 7th seminar, we welcomed colleagues from CROPSNet and the UK Council for Graduate Education for the launch of the report“Mental Health & Wellbeing of Online PGT Students: Pinch Points & Good Practice”. The session also introduced a companion self-assessment tool designed to help programme teams put the report’s recommendations into practice.
The presentation focused on the findings and recommendations emerging from this collaborative project, which explores how programme teams can more effectively support the mental health and wellbeing of online postgraduate taught (PGT) students. Drawing on student and staff co-design workshops, sector practice, and existing literature, the report identifies key “pinch points” across the online student journey and highlights practical, evidence-informed approaches to enhancing wellbeing through programme design and delivery.
The seminar also provided an opportunity to discuss the report’s implications for online education and to reflect on how institutions can create more supportive and connected learning environments for postgraduate students.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Ellie Devenish-Nelson (University of Edinburgh), who presented on “Learning from Alumni: from Teaching to Programme Impact and Beyond", for our Seminar #6.
Dr Devenish-Nelson presented on her work leading engagement with the alumni of the MSc Biodiversity, Wildlife and Ecosystem Health at the University of Edinburgh. This presentation covered several intertwined elements: teaching, research, and community building.
The seminar also included participation from alumni about their experiences engaging with the programme and their motivations for doing so.

For our first seminar of 2026, we welcomed Dr Gerhard Kristandl (Mag. rer. soc. oec., PhD, NTF), Associate Professor at Greenwich Business School, to present on Generative AI in the context of Online Postgraduate Education.
Dr Kristandl's presentation built a very convincing case that online PGT programmes should focus on future-proofing their graduates, rather than AI-proofing their assignments.

CROPSNet were delighted to welcome Dr Jason Lawson, Clinical Research Fellow, NHSE Fellow, and Teaching Fellow at Imperial College and the IGHI, to present on current use cases and the future potential of Extended Reality (XR) for online PGT education.
This session introduced exciting and novel approaches to using digital to deliver and enhance teaching on online PGT programmes.

CROPSNet hosted its inaugural conference in London on Friday the 12th of September 2025. The event took place in the Sir Michael Uren Hub, Imperial College, and online.
The one-day conference was titled "Building Understanding & Driving Progress in Online Postgraduate Taught Education" and brought together peers involved in the delivery and teaching of online PGT programmes.

CROPSNet were delighted to welcome Monica Tolica, MSc, to deliver the 3rd CROPSNet seminar. The seminar took place on Thursday the 10th of July.
In this seminar, Monica drew on her lived experience as a mature student in the fully online MSc in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh to retrace a journey of transformation - one shaped by challenge, discovery, and growth.
The presentation sparked dialogue and inspired practical, research-informed approaches to inclusive design, centered on the student experience and relevant to other online PGT programmes.

Thursday the 20th of March 2025
The second CROPSNet seminar took place on Thursday the 20th of March 2025, and was hosted online.
We welcomed Jenny Crow from the University of Glasgow, who talked about the process of aligning online learning materials for on-campus and ODL programmes, and Dr Fiona Sim, also from the University of Glasgow, who shared her experience of setting up the new ODL MSc in Infant Mental Health.

CROPSNet Launch
The launch event for the Collaborative Research for Online Postgraduate Studies Network (CROPSNet) took place on Tuesday the 10th of September 2024, with over 30 higher education professionals from six different UK institutions in attendance. The network is the first of its kind, and the success of this initial event has provided a very strong springboard for future CROPSNet activities.
